More Siege of Mirkwood update information – Lord of the Rings Online (Part 1 of 2)

A little late to the party here, but today I will be discussing some more changes that are coming up in , the upcoming expansion for . posted 2 more developer diaries recently describing changes to Character Stats and delineating information on new skills/skill upgrades that will be coming with the new expansion next month.

This is part one and details changes to Character stats and the Character Panel.

I will be discussing 2 separate developer diary entries today, the first one is regarding Character Panel Updates ().

One of the biggest changes (in my eyes) is that characters now will have 3 new statistics that will offset some mob changes that will come with the expansion (see my post on for a blurb about mob changes). The new statistics are Melee Critical Defense, Ranged Critical Defense, and Tactical Critical Defense.

New Statistics/Statistic Changes

Heres a list of some game changes related to these new statistics:

  • Guardians and Wardens gain a passive trait at level 20 that increases their Critical Defence ratings sufficiently to reduce their chance to suffer a critical hit from even level monsters by 5%.
  • Captains gain a passive trait at level 20 that increases their Critical Defence ratings sufficiently to reduce their chance to suffer a critical hit from even level monsters by 3%.
  • The Champion’s Glory stance increases their Critical Defence ratings sufficiently to reduce their chance to suffer a critical hit from even level monsters by 3%.
  • The Champion’s Ardor stance increases their Critical Defence ratings sufficiently to reduce their chance to suffer a critical hit from even level monsters by 1%.
  • Heavy Shields will now increase their wielder’s Critical Defence ratings sufficiently to reduce their chance to suffer a critical hit by 5%.
  • Warden Shields will now increase their wielder’s Critical Defence ratings sufficiently to reduce their chance to suffer a critical hit by 4%.
  • Shields will now increase their wielder’s Critical Defence ratings sufficiently to reduce their chance to suffer a critical hit by 2%.

While the new statistics are aimed at making things more comprehensible (easier to determine your strengths/weaknesses) – it seems that you have to be in the ‘tanker’ range to actually have any chance of mitigation, shields are playing a much more important role. I could be totally wrong, but all of the listed changes above affect Melee oriented classes. Once again my beloved Hunter seems to be on a limb.

That isn’t the only thing to be changed/added though – More changes were delineated in the developer diary. For one: Melee, Ranged, and Tactical Vulnerability have been changed to Defense (name change) to make it easier to understand what the stat does – It was apparently confusing for players seeing their vulnerability increasing with better gear, rather than decreasing. The name change should help bring everything to a better light. Heres a detailed breakdown of what the change entails:

  • We have changed the name, since gaining negative vulnerability was a bit awkward and confusing.
    • Melee Vulnerability => Melee Defence
    • Ranged Vulnerability => Ranged Defence
    • Tactical Vulnerability => Tactical Defence
  • The statistics have been converted to ratings and the bonuses received from these ratings are capped at 15%. The Ranged Defence bonus on Large Shields and most skill bonuses will be left as a percentage bonus towards Defence, rather than a rating value. Virtue bonuses and item bonuses have been converted to rating values.
  • These statistics will now also apply to damage-over-time (DOT) skills performed on you. The opposing statistics – Melee, Ranged, and Tactical Offense, will apply to DOT skills that you perform on targets.

There are also changes that allow you to see your Incoming/Outgoing healing percentage so you can easily understand whats going on in that area. I won’t go into detail about it but you can see all the info on Page 2 of the developer diary linked above.

Character Panel Updates

The character panel will be receiving an update to coincide with the stat changes listed above, information will be separated out into tabs for easy viewing and separation. There will be 3 tabs that will break down the stats into easy to digest information:

Defenses Tab = This tab wil list your characters basic stats (the standard we are used to: might, agility, etc), along with avoidances, mitigation ,etc.

Combat Effectiveness Tab – This tab will show the basic stats along with detailed information on the new stats being added by the update. This includes incoming healing, outgoing healing, shield use, etc as well as your DPS for equipped weapon(s).

Melee/Ranged/Tactical Tab – This tab will display your Critical Rating, new Critical Defense rating, Offence rating, and Defence (which used to be called Vulnerability) rating according to its source (Melee, Ranged, Tactical).

As with the previous character panel, you will be able to mouse over a stat to get a tooltip with more detailed information.

That ends part 1 of my discussion on the 2 new Developer Diaries, stay tuned for Part 2 coming shortly.

My thoughts: Lots of changes are coming with Mirkwood – I am really wary about some of them, but am hoping that I am just being paranoid. This weekend the Bullroarer Test Server for people to check out the new Skirmish System so I may jump in to see about the combat system/stat changes (Thanks to for the information regarding the test weekend – the link above leads to his blog post regarding it).

  1. great post, I was looking to pull this together but will just post a link over here!

  2. […]I knew some of the information but couldn’t figure out a way to explain it – SneakyHobbits does a really good job of breaking it down.  Check it out over here. […] (Trackback – edited because auto trackback text was messed up ~Branadoc)

  3. In this case, traits and virtues will also have to change. So Innocence will no longer add -5% melee damage, but add +X melee defence?

I wonder how much this will change the relative value of certain virtues.

  4. […] my part one of this article, I talked about the changes to Character statistics and the Character panel. In […]
