Game Downtime for 12/15/2009 – Upgrade Time!

servers will be down on December 15, 2009 from 4am Eastern Time to 4pm Eastern Time (All time zones: Start Time, End Time). “That’s a ridiculous downtime” I can hear some people saying (Ok, I can’t really hear anyone saying that… but you get my drift right?) – well, this downtime isn’t just for a patch or hot fix… is upgrading the hardware that the game runs on!

(NOTE: Times provided are for reference purposes only – actual times may change with little to no notice. The start and end time links above take you to TimeandDate.com and show a list of all time zone times according to that day/date/location combination)

Thats right, after only 2 years of being Live the game is getting a serious hardware upgrade which should help keep the game going top notch. Sapience originally posted about this late last week, but I figured it would be better to put out the notice on this blog today.

To top off the hardware goodness – Turbine will be running a special “Moving Day” lottery over at ! The Bullroarer test server will also be up and available during the main game downtime – so if you really need a game fix go ahead and and play there (there is even a you can bring your current characters over with).

Lord of the Rings Online Live Producer Aaron “Rowan” Campbell had this to say about the upgrade:

Tuesday December 15th will be a big day for The Lord of the Rings Online™, as we complete our most substantial hardware upgrade since the game launched in North America in April 2007. This new server hardware gives us additional speed and capacity to support the growing world of Middle-earth, from the battles of Mirkwood to new Skirmishes across Eriador. It also provides the room to support the growing population of Middle-earth – there has been a huge response to the launch of Siege of Mirkwood™, and we are delighted to see both returning players and new explorers to the world. Thank you for your patience, and we look forward to opening the doors again once this transition is complete.

This can only be good for the future of the game – though I am willing to bet that the lack of heavy load on the servers w/ the new hardware will cause some people to say the “sky is falling” (e.g. game is dying cause obviously there’s no one playing… :p)

Well, thats it for todays news update! Forewarned is Forearmed after all.
